Siren Call

Love is defined as a strong feeling of affection or great interest and or pleasure in doing something. I am lucky enough that in my 20 short years I have fallen in love quite completely a few times. I am equally as unfortunate to have been played, used and manipulated by almost three times as many people as I have been involved with, romantic and plutonic relationships alike.

“Someday someone will come along who will tear down the walls you’ve built around your heart and when that love comes back to you, you must do everything in your power to fight for it.”

The sad thing is, you can love someone with all your heart and soul and when you are together you can burn like the sun on bonfire night. However, sometimes it rains, sometimes the clouds conceal the ultraviolet light and the beautiful burning flame you once had burns out quicker than it should.

I saw something online that seems to describe my feelings on love pretty well.

‘One day a girl saw a comet flash across the sky. The comet was so beautiful, so amazing that the girl who saw it felt as though her life suddenly had meaning. However, when the comet went away and the light faded from the heavens, the girl spent her entire life eagerly awaiting its return. The comet brought so many blessings of which the girl was so unfamiliar; direction, beauty, loyalty, meaning. There were many people who couldn’t understand the girl’s obsession. Sometimes she even walked among their doubt because she found it hard to grasp herself. Yet in her darkest hours, she could feel the burn and hiss of longing in her heart that gave her hope – one day her comet would return. When that comet returned she would be whole again and her world would be complete once more. Although it may fade from the sky it will always return. You are my comet.

Sometimes things don’t always go the way we would like, shit happens. People leave, circumstances change, sometimes we just wake up and think ‘oh hell no, not today’. Draw up your dreams on the back of a napkin and get to the stage in your life where that napkin becomes a place, person or a feeling. One day, you can put that napkin in a box and feel content that you were brave enough to strive for what your heart desires with every cell of your being despite the distractions, the siren calls and the people who tried to sway you from your path.

‘I would brave the oceans and sail past the sirens to find my way back to you.’
