The Grinch Misconception

Dr Seuss was a massive part of my childhood. I do not like green eggs and ham was one of my favourites, among Cat in The Hat and many others. I loved the drawings and the rhyming the most, which is probably why I have always loved poetry and creative writing even from an early age.

An epiphany I have had recently is that the Grinch did not hate Christmas.   Think about it. The Grinch hated people. He hated their arrogance, he loathed their selfishness and their inability to be nonjudgemental to those who were different.

As most people of every generation will be able to empathise, bullying is a really hideous thing. Except, you are not green or fluffy with a really funny looking nose. Even though I am discussing a Dr Seuss story, the principles remain the same. Bullying is something that everyone will face at one point in their lives, and in itself does not discriminate – regardless of your age, upbringing, race, gender or sex – you can be bullied. The Grinch is ridiculed for his appearance and quite literally mocked for the way he behaves, and any advances he makes for either friendships or romance. He was outcast for being different.

Being different is not bad. Unique is not wrong. Your individuality is what makes you yourself and that is an amazing thing. It is incredibly difficult to look in the mirror and not see that Christmas dinner double chin, or the slight cellulite on your arms. But it is important to remember that you are the way you are because that is who you are meant to be – improvements can be made and you can change certain attributes but you shall remain ever as much yourself. Yourself is just perfect.
